Description
Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT is an antibiotic medicine that contains cefixime as an active ingredient. It is used to treat bacterial infections affecting the lungs, throat, kidneys, bladder, ureters and urethra. It is also used to treat a sexually transmitted infection called gonorrhoea that infects both men and women. This medicine kills and stops the growth of bacteria causing the infection. It is not effective against infections caused by viruses.
Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT has some common side effects such as diarrhoea, stomach pain, headache, weakness, nausea, and vomiting. Consult your doctor if these symptoms persist. Avoid any activity that requires concentration if you feel drowsy after taking this medicine. Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to it.
Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT can be taken with or without food. Disperse it in a glass of water and swallow the solution, do not crush or chew the tablet. Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT use should not be stopped suddenly, it is always recommended to finish the entire course of treatment to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance. Using Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT when it is not required can make it less effective for future infections.
Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT may not be suitable for all people. Inform your doctor if you have any liver or kidney issues before taking this medicine. What is it prescribed for?
Urinary Tract Infection
An infection in any part of your urinary system (kidneys, bladder, ureters, or urethra) is called a urinary tract infection (UTI). Women are at greater risk of getting this infection. UTIs are caused by bacteria and in some cases, viruses or fungi. Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT is used to treat urinary tract infections only caused by bacteria.
Tonsilitis/Pharyngitis
Pharyngitis and tonsillitis are infections that cause swelling and soreness in the throat and tonsils. If the infection affects both the throat and the tonsils, then it would be called pharyngotonsillitis. Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT is used to treat pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and/or pharyngotonsillitis.
Bronchitis
Bronchitis is the swelling and irritation of bronchial tubes that regulates air passage in the lungs. Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT is used to treat acute bronchitis caused by bacteria.
Gonorrhoea
Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by Neisseria gonorrhoea bacteria that infects both men and women. It spreads during vaginal, oral or anal sex without using a condom or other barrier method. Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT is used to treat the gonococcal infection.
When not to use?
Allergy
Avoid taking Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT if you are allergic to it. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, breathing difficulty, etc.

Warnings for special population
Pregnancy
Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT is generally safe in pregnancy to treat bacterial infections. It is not known to cause birth defects when used in pregnancy. However, consult your doctor before using this medicine.
Breast-feeding
Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT may not be safe to use during breastfeeding. It is not known whether cefixime is excreted in human milk. Your doctor may prescribe this medicine if the benefits outweigh the risks.
General warnings
Clostridium difficile-Associated Diarrhoea
Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT may also kill the helpful bacteria in your stomach or intestine. This leads to an overgrowth of the Clostridium bacteria which releases a toxin that causes severe diarrhoea. Seek medical help if you experience severe diarrhoea that is watery or bloody. Consult your pharmacist/doctor before taking anti-diarrhoeal medication.
Liver diseases
Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT may increase liver enzyme levels and cause liver swelling.
Inform your doctor if have any liver problems. Your doctor may adjust the dose of this medicine if required based on your condition.
Antibiotic resistance
Finish your entire course of treatment with Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT to avoid antibiotic resistance (the bacteria may become resistant to antibiotics), even if your condition gets better after taking few doses. If you still feel unwell after completing your course, consult your doctor.
Driving or operating machinery
Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT may cause dizziness, confusion, or fits. Hence, do not drive a vehicle or operate machinery after taking this medicine.
Allergic skin reaction
Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT is likely to cause allergic skin reactions. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms such as skin rash, or severe itching/swelling, especially on the face.
Seizures
Use Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT with caution if you have seizures or fits because it can trigger the condition. Seizure medicines can be continued by consulting your doctor. Your doctor may adjust the dose of this medicine if required based on your clinical condition.
Haemolytic Anaemia
Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT may rarely cause haemolytic anaemia where red blood cells are destroyed before the end of the normal lifespan of the cells. Your doctor may advise a blood test while using this medicine if required.
Dosage
Missed Dose
Try not to skip a dose of Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT. And if a dose is skipped, do not add it up to the next dose.
Overdose
Seek emergency medical attention in case of an overdose with Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT.
Interactions
General Instructions
Take Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT with or without food. Never take more than the prescribed dose.
Do not take antacids within 2 hours of taking Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT as they affect its absorption.
Usage instructions- Ziprax 100 MG Tablet DT dissolves quickly in water. It can be dispersed in a teaspoonful or a glass of boiled and cooled water before administration. Do not take if the tablet is not dissolved/dispersed completely in the water.
Consult your doctor immediately if diarrhoea or allergic reactions occur after using this medicine.
Keep away from the reach of children and pets. Do not use it after the expiry date. Ensure that unused medicine is disposed of properly. Do not give your medicine to other people even if their condition appears to be the same as yours.
