Vertin OD 24mg Tablet (Betahistine 24mg)

INTRODUCTION

VERTIN contains Betahistine which is a histamine analogue medicine that is used to treat symptoms of Meniere’s syndrome such as dizziness (vertigo), ringing in the ears (tinnitus), loss of hearing and nausea. It works by improving the blood flow in the inner ear. This lowers the buildup of pressure. Meniere’s disease is a condition of the inner ear which causes the attack of dizziness with a spinning sensation (vertigo), hearing loss and noises in the ear (tinnitus). The attacks can vary in severity and how often they occur.

Always take VERTIN as your doctor told you. It may be taken with or without food. You should not stop taking this medicine without consulting your doctor. Before taking this medicine, consult your doctor for advice if you have liver, kidney, heart disease or any other medical condition. The most common side effects are headache, occasional drowsiness, nausea and indigestion.

HOW VERTIN WORKS

In addition, betahistine has an antagonistic effect at H3 receptors, and increases the levels of neurotransmitters released from the nerve endings. The increased amount of histamine is released from the histaminergic nerve endings stimulates H1 receptors, thus augmenting the direct agonistic effects of betahistine on these receptors.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Always take this medicine as your doctor told you. Swallow the medicine whole with water. Do not chew the medicine. The starting dose for adults is one to two 8 mg tablets or a half to one 16 mg tablet three times a day. The dose is usually in the range 24-48 mg daily.

SERIOUS
Allergic reactions such as swelling of your face, lips, tongue or neck. This may cause difficulty breathing
Skin rash, inflamed itchy skin
COMMON
Headache
Occasional drowsiness
Nausea
Indigestion
Mild gastric complaints such as vomiting, stomach pain and bloating

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Skin rash:

Avoid hot showers or baths, since hot water can irritate the skin. Moisturizers can be used regular basis to soothe and hydrate the affected area.

Indigestion:

Drink lots of fluids, such as water or squash, to avoid dehydration. Do not take any other medicines without speaking to a doctor.

Nausea and vomiting:

Keep try taking this medicine with, or just after, a meal or snack and stick to simple meals and do not eat rich or spicy food.

Headache:

Rest and drink plenty of fluids. Apply a cold, wet cloth or ice pack to your forehead. Rest in a quiet, comfortable, dark room.

Stomach pain:

Try to rest and relax. You can eat and drink slowly or have frequent meals. Keeping a heat pad or a covered hot water pack on your stomach may also help. If still pain persists, speak to your doctor.

PREGNANCY
VERTIN is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless necessary. Consult your doctor for advice.

BREASTFEEDING
VERTIN is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless necessary. Consult your doctor for advice.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or using any tools or machines if your ability is affected by this medicine.

ALCOHOL
Avoid drinking too much of alcohol while taking this medicine.

KIDNEY
This medicine should be taken with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Consult your doctor for advice.

LIVER
This medicine should be taken with caution in patients with severe liver disease. Consult your doctor for advice.

ALLERGY
If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to this medicine or any other ingredients in this medicine.

HEART DISEASE
This medicine should be taken with caution in patients with severe heart disease. Consult your doctor for advice.

INTERACTIONS

Tell your doctor if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines such as:

Anti-histamines used to treat allergies
Monoamine-oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) used to treat depression or Parkinson’s disease
