Description

Rifagut 400 MG Tablet is an effective medicine used to treat bacterial infections of the intestine. It is used for the treatment of traveler’s diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea caused due to certain specific strains of bacteria.

Uses of Rifagut 400 MG Tablet

What is it prescribed for?
Traveler’s Diarrhea
This medicine is used for the treatment of traveler’s diarrhea caused by non-invasive strains of Escherichia coli. This diarrhea is not accompanied by fever or the presence of blood in the stool. It is not used for the treatment of diarrhea caused by other strains of bacteria.
Hepatic encephalopathy
This medicine is used for the prevention of episodes of hepatic encephalopathy- a brain disorder characterized by changes in thinking, behavior, and personality caused by the presence of toxic substances in the brain due to failure of the liver to clear them out of the body.
Irritable bowel syndrome associated diarrhea
This medicine is also used for the treatment of diarrhea associated with Irritable bowel syndrome.

When not to use?

Allergy
This medicine is not recommended for use in patients with a known allergy to rifaximin or any other inactive ingredients present in the formulation.

Warnings

Warnings for special population
Pregnancy
This medicine is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless necessary. All the risks and benefits should be discussed with the doctor before taking this medicine.
Breast-feeding
This medicine is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless necessary. All the risks and benefits should be discussed with the doctor before taking this medicine.
General warnings
Traveler’s diarrhea caused by other bacteria
This medicine is not effective to treat diarrhea which is caused by other organisms like Campylobacter jejuni or shigella strains. Any diarrhea complicated by fever and/or blood in the stool should not be treated with this medicine.
Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea
Avoid the use of this medicine if the patient experiences severe diarrhea after receiving therapy with this medicine. Antibiotic therapy will cause an imbalance in the normal microbial flora in the large intestine, which promotes the growth of a bacteria called Clostridium difficile. This will result in severe diarrhea. Appropriate corrective measures, dose adjustments, or replacement with a suitable alternative may be necessary based on the clinical condition.
Drug resistance
Usage of this medicine without sufficient proof or suspicion of a bacterial infection should be avoided. Irrational dosing might fail in providing the benefits and even cause toxicity. It may also increase the risk of developing bacteria that are drug-resistant.
Liver disease
This medicine should be used with caution in patients with liver diseases due to the increased risk of severe adverse effects. Close monitoring of liver function tests is necessary while receiving this medicine. Appropriate dose adjustments or replacement with a suitable alternative may be required in some cases based on the clinical condition.
Driving or operating machinery
This medicine may cause dizziness, fainting, etc. in some patients. It is advised that you do not perform any activities such as driving a vehicle or operating machinery if you experience any of these symptoms.

Dosage

Missed Dose
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose then the missed dose can be skipped.
Overdose
Seek emergency medical treatment or contact the doctor in case of an overdose. Symptoms of an overdose may include fainting, difficulty in breathing, dizziness, headache, nausea, and vomiting.

Take this medicine as instructed by the doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts than advised/prescribed. Consult the doctor if you experience any undesirable side effects. Ensure that the treatment course is completed. Do not stop the use of this medicine without consulting your doctor.
