Themiset 75mg Injection (Palonosetron 75mg)

INTRODUCTION

THEMISET 75MG contains Palonosetron which belongs to a group of medicines called Serotonin (5HT3) antagonists. It is used to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy and also treats post operative nausea and vomiting.

5­ HT3 receptors are located on the nerve terminals of the vagus in the periphery and centrally in the chemoreceptor trigger zone. Chemotherapeutic agents produce nausea and vomiting by releasing serotonin from the enterochromaffin cells of the small intestine and that the released serotonin then activates 5-HT3 receptors located on vagal afferents to initiate the vomiting reflex.

It will be given under the supervision of a doctor or nurse and may be used alone or with other medications. Before receiving THEMISET 75MG, tell your doctor about your complete medical history including any heart-problem, liver impairment, kidney malfunction, blockage in stomach or intestine. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to consult the doctor before using this medicine. The common side effects are headache, dizziness, constipation and diarrhea.

HOW THEMISET 75MG WORKS

THEMISET 75MG works by blocking the action of a chemical called serotonin, which can cause nausea or vomiting.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

THEMISET 75MG will be administered into a vein by your doctor or nurse about 30 minutes before the start of chemotherapy.

SIDE EFFECTS OF THEMISET 75MG

SERIOUS
Swelling of the lips, face, tongue or throat, breathing difficulty or collapsing, itchy, lumpy rash (hives)
COMMON
Headache
Dizziness
Constipation
Diarrhoea

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Headache:

Rest and drink plenty of fluids. Apply a wet or cold cloth on forehead and rest in a quiet, comfortable and dark room.

Diarrhoea:

Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

Constipation:

Take fruits, vegetables whole grains and fiber rich foods regularly.

Dizziness:

Sit or lie down immediately when you feel dizziness. Lie still with eyes closed in a dark room.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY
It is not known whether THEMISET 75MG will cause any harmful effects when used during pregnancy. Consult your doctor for advice.

BREASTFEEDING
It is not known whether THEMISET 75MG is excreted in human milk. Consult your doctor for advice.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or handle heavy machines if you experience dizziness or tiredness while using this medicine.

KIDNEY
THEMISET 75MG is safe to use in patients suffering with active kidney diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.

LIVER
THEMISET 75MG is safe to use in patients suffering with active liver diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.

ALLERGY
Tell your doctor if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Palonosetron.

HEART DISEASE
THEMISET 75MG should be used with caution in patients with heart disease and abnormal heart beat. Consult your doctor for advice.

OTHERS

Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have or had, acute bowel obstruction, repeated constipation and imbalance of certain minerals in blood (potassium and magnesium).
Use in pediatrics:

THEMISET 75MG will be given as a slow infusion into a vein by your doctor or nurse (aged 1 month to 17 years). Your doctor will decide the dose, depending on the child’s body weight.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug – Drug interactions:

Inform your physician if you are taking,

Fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline, fluvoxamine, citalopram, escitalopram (treats panic disorders)
Venlafaxine, duloxetine (treats depression and anxiety)
Amiodarone, nicardipine, quinidine (treats heart problems)
Moxifloxacin, erythromycin (treats infections)
Haloperidol, chlorpromazine, quetiapine, thioridazine (treats psychotic disorders)
Domperidone (used for nausea and vomiting)
Overdosage:

There is no known antidote to THEMISET 75MG. Overdose will be managed with supportive care.
