Quel Sr 200 MG

Quel SR 200 Tablet treats schizophrenia in adults and adolescents above 15 and manic episodes of bipolar disorder type one. It is also used as a supportive medicine in treating major depressive disorder.

This medicine contains quetiapine as its active ingredient, an atypical antipsychotic medicine. Quel SR Tablet binds to several chemical receptor sites in the brain and the nerves. It modulates the release of those chemicals in the brain that regulate mood, appetite, anger, sleep and thoughts. Quel SR tablet gets released slowly and prolongedly, making it safer and more effective in preventing relapse of the symptoms. It helps in improving negative as well as positive symptoms of schizophrenia. Side effects of Quel SR Tablets include sleepiness, tremors, constipation, low blood pressure, increase in blood sugar and blood fat levels, weight gain and thoughts of hurting self. Quel SR Tablets are not advisable for treating psychotic symptoms in older adults with dementia. It should be given with caution and in low doses to older adults as there is an increased risk of falls, paralysis, and death.

Pregnancy

Can I take Quel SR Tablets during pregnancy?

The use of Quel SR in pregnancy should be avoided as it has been associated with risks to the unborn child. The newborn baby may show signs of withdrawal if the mother has taken it during pregnancy. The child may develop restlessness, loose muscles, breathing difficulty and feeding problems. If you get pregnant, talk to the doctor while taking treatment with Quel SR.

Breast Feeding

Can I take Quel SR Tablets while breastfeeding?

You should avoid taking Quel SR Tablet while breastfeeding. It may pass through the breast milk and cause poor feeding, lethargy and slow development in the babies. Talk to the doctor about your treatment while breastfeeding the baby.

Driving

Can I drive if I have taken Quel SR Tablets?

Quel SR Tablet may cause sleepiness, slow reflexes, shakiness, feeling sick and confused. This may not be safe for driving. You should not drive till you are sure that the side effects of Quel SR have subsided.

Alcohol

Can I consume alcohol with Quel SR Tablets?

You should avoid taking alcohol with Quel SR as it may cause excessive sleepiness, tremors, vomiting, breathing problems, dizziness and loss of consciousness.

Mode of Action of Quel Sr 200 MG

How Does It Work?

Quel SR Tablet acts by binding to multiple types of chemical receptor sites in the brain. This slows down or stops the responses from these sites. These sites regulate the levels of several chemicals in the brain responsible for mood, memory, sleep, learning and anxiety. By blocking these sites, Quel SR balances the release of these chemicals in different areas of the brain and nerves making them less effective for causing psychotic symptoms. Quel SR has the capacity to bind to these sites long enough to control the symptoms. It doesn’t remain attached to these sites for a very long time, making it safer from relapse and some of the side effects.

Directions for Use of Quel Sr 200 MG

Quel SR should be taken with a glass of water.
Swallow the medicine whole without breaking it.
It should be taken without food as fatty meals affect the absorption of Quel SR tablets.
Follow the advice of the doctor about the time and dose of the medicine.

Interactions of Quel Sr 200 MG

Interactions with other medicines

Medicines used to treat high blood pressure may get enhanced in their action due to the blood pressure-lowering effect of Quel SR. The dose of blood pressure-lowering medicines should be readjusted with Quel SR.

Medicines used in parkinsonism, like levodopa may become less effective than Quel SR.
Medicines used to treat seizures carbamazepine, and phenytoin reduce the levels of Quel SR in the blood.
Medicines used to treat fungal infections such as itraconazole and ketoconazole increase Quel SR levels in the blood.
Medicines such as belladonna, atropine, dicyclomine increase the gut-related side effects of Quel SR tablets.
Medicine used in treating tuberculosis, such as rifampicin, reduces Quel SR’s availability in the blood when given with it.

Interactions with food items

Fatty meals change the absorption of Quel SR tablets. It is preferably taken without food.

Storage and disposal of Quel Sr 200 MG

Quel SR Tablets should be stored at room temperature up to 250 C. Keep the tablets away from sunlight and moisture. Keep the medicine safely so that children and pets cannot reach it. Leftover tablets should be disposed of safely.

Dosage of Quel Sr 200 MG

Overdose

The symptoms of overdose of Quel SR Tablet are excessive sleepiness, shakiness, aggressiveness, low blood pressure, fast heartbeat, tremors, confusion, inability to pass urine, severe breathing problems, coma and death. Go to the nearest hospital in case of an overdose.

Missed a Dose

Take the tablet only if you have missed a dose close to the actual time of that dose. If you remember the missed dose near the time of the next dose, then skip the missed dose. Take the next dose as per the regular schedule. You should not take two doses together to make up for the missed dose.
