Pirox 0.5% Gel 30 gm belongs to the group of medications known as NSAID’s (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) used to relieve symptoms like pain, inflammation and joint stiffness caused by rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease in which the two ends of the joints come together due to the breakdown of a protective covering (cartilage). Due to the absence of this protective covering, the joints rub against each other, leading to pain and stiffness. Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease (body’s immune system attacks its tissue), leading to joint pain and damage.

Pirox 0.5% Gel 30 gm works by blocking the effect of a chemical messenger in your body, known as cyclo-oxygenase (COX) enzymes that make another chemical ‘prostaglandins’ (PG). These prostaglandins are produced at injury sites and cause pain and swelling. By blocking the effect of COX enzymes, lesser PGs are produced, which reduces mild to moderate pain and inflammation at the injured or damaged site.

Pirox Gel 30 gm can be taken with a meal or empty stomach. The capsule form of Pirox Gel 30 gm should not be chewed, broken, or crushed, rather swallowed as a whole with a glass of water. Take Pirox Gel 30 gm at the same time every day. The injection form of Pirox Gel 30 gm will be administered by a healthcare professional. Do not self-administer. In some cases, you may experience certain common side-effects such as diarrhoea, dizziness, headache and heartburn. Most of these side-effects do not require medical attention and will resolve gradually over time. However, you are advised to speak to your doctor if you experience these side-effects persistently.

Pirox 0.5% Gel 30 gm can increase your risk of fatal heart attack or stroke. So, if you have had any recent heart bypass surgery, do not take Pirox Gel 30 gm. Pirox Gel 30 gm increases the chances of stomach ulcers and bleeding. To treat your condition effectually, continue taking Pirox Gel 30 gm for as long as your doctor has prescribed. To avoid recurring symptoms, do not stop it midway. Consult your doctor before taking Pirox Gel 30 gm if you are pregnant or breast-feeding; your doctor will prescribe you Pirox Gel 30 gm only if the benefits outweigh the risks. Pirox 0.5% Gel 30 gm causes drowsiness and dizziness, so drive with caution. Pirox Gel 30 gm should not be given to children as safety and efficacy have not been established. Avoid consuming alcohol along with Pirox Gel 30 gm as it could lead to increased drowsiness and dizziness. It could also increase the risk of stomach bleeding.
