Description
Zocef 500 MG Tablet is an antibiotic medicine that contains cefuroxime. It is used to treat bacterial infections of the lungs, nose, throat, ears, skin, bladder, etc. It is also used to treat a sexually transmitted disease caused by Neisseria gonorrhoea bacteria that infects both men and women. It kills the bacteria, thereby stops the infection from spreading. Zocef 500 MG Tablet is not effective against infections caused by viruses. Your doctor may advise this medicine alone or in combination with other medications to treat bacterial infections.
Zocef 500 MG Tablet may cause side effects like diarrhoea, stomach pain, headache, weakness, nausea, and vomiting. Contact your doctor if these symptoms persist. Do not take this medicine if you are previously allergic to it. Zocef 500 MG Tablet is not recommended for use in children below 12 years of age.
Zocef 500 MG Tablet is recommended to take with food to avoid gastric irritation. Your doctor will decide the dose of this medicine based on the severity of your infection. For the ease of remembering, take this tablet around the same time every day. Once an antibiotic is started, it is always recommended to finish the entire course of treatment. Taking an antibiotic when it is not required can make it less effective in treating further infections.
Zocef 500 MG Tablet desired effect may not be achieved when taken with medications like antacids or proton pump inhibitors. Therefore, take Zocef 500 MG Tablet at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking such medications. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, before using Zocef 500 MG Tablet.

What is it prescribed for?
Pharyngitis/Tonsilitis
Pharyngitis and tonsillitis are infections that cause swelling and soreness in the throat and tonsils. If it is the infection affects both the throat and the tonsils, then it would be called pharyngotonsillitis. Zocef 500 MG Tablet is used to treat pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and/or pharyngotonsillitis.
Sinusitis
Sinusitis is the swelling of membranes that line your nose and surrounding sinuses. It is often caused by bacteria and sometimes, viruses and fungi. You may experience a stuffed nose and pain or pressure behind your eyes, nose, cheeks, or forehead. Zocef 500 MG Tablet is used to treat bacterial sinusitis and provides relief in three to eight weeks.
Bronchitis
Bronchitis is the swelling and irritation of bronchial tubes that regulates air passage in the lungs. Zocef 500 MG Tablet is used to treat bronchitis caused by bacteria. It is also used to treat a sudden worsening of chronic bronchitis (long-term inflammation of the bronchi) and subsequent episodes of bronchitis.
Skin and soft tissue infections
Skin and soft tissue infections occur when the bacteria invade the skin and its supporting structures. Zocef 500 MG Tablet is used to treat all skin infections including abscess caused by bacteria.
Urinary tract infections
An infection in any part of your urinary system (kidneys, bladder, ureters, or urethra) is called a urinary tract infection (UTI). UTIs are the most common infections in humans and women are at greater risk of getting this infection. UTIs are caused by bacteria and in some cases, viruses or fungi. Zocef 500 MG Tablet is used to treat urinary tract infections caused by bacteria.
Lyme disease
Lyme disease is an infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi. This infection is spread to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks that carries the bacteria. This condition can be treated in a few weeks by using antibiotics. Zocef 500 MG Tablet is used for the treatment of Lyme disease.
Gonorrhoea
Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by Neisseria gonorrhoea bacteria that infects both men and women. It spreads during vaginal, oral or anal sex without using a condom or other barrier method. Zocef 500 MG Tablet is used to treat the gonococcal infection.
When not to use?
Allergy
Avoid using Zocef 500 MG Tablet if you are allergic to it. Inform your doctor if there is any history of allergy to cefuroxime. If you notice any symptoms such as skin rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), dizziness, breathing difficulty, etc., seek immediate medical attention.

Warnings for special population
Pregnancy
Zocef 500 MG Tablet is safe to use in pregnancy to treat bacterial infections. However, it is recommended to use this medicine only after consulting your doctor.
Breast-feeding
Zocef 500 MG Tablet is safe to use during breastfeeding. It enters into breast milk at low levels. However, your doctor prescribes this medicine only if the benefits outweigh the risks. If it is used in your breastfeeding, the baby should be observed for symptoms such as diarrhoea and yeast infection.
General warnings
Diarrhoea
Zocef 500 MG Tablet can cause diarrhoea because it may also kill the helpful bacteria in your stomach or intestine. Inform your doctor if you experience severe diarrhoea while using this medicine.
Antibiotic resistance
The entire course of treatment with Zocef 500 MG Tablet should be completed, to avoid antibiotic resistance (microorganisms develop the ability to defeat the antibiotics) even if your condition gets better after taking few doses.
Driving or operating machinery
Zocef 500 MG Tablet may cause dizziness, confusion, or fits. Do not drive a vehicle or operate machinery after taking this medicine.
Antacids
If you are taking an antacid containing aluminium and magnesium salts for indigestion, they can delay the effects of Zocef 500 MG Tablet. Hence, it is recommended to take this medicine at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking antacids.
Dosage
Missed Dose
Do not skip a dose of Zocef 500 MG Tablet. If you forgot to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If the time for your next dose is near skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.
Overdose
Never take more than the prescribed dose. Seek emergency medical attention if you suspect that you might have taken an overdose ofZocef 500 MG Tablet.
