INTRODUCTION
THIORIL 25MG contains Thioridazine which belongs to the group of medicines called Antipsychotics. It is used to manage schizophrenia in patients who fail to respond adequately to treatment with other antipsychotic drugs. Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental disorder that affects the way a person thinks, acts, expresses emotions, perceives reality, and relates to others. It is characterized by symptoms such as delusions (beliefs that are away from reality), hallucinations, and disorganized thoughts perceived from disorganized speech.
THIORIL 25 MG is not recommended for use in patients with cardiac disorders (such as cardiac failure, angina), comatose or severe drug-induced depressed states (such as drowsiness, slow breathing), uncorrected hypokalaemia (low potassium level in blood), severe photosensitivity, and serious haematological conditions (such as bone marrow suppression). THIORIL 25 MG should be used with caution in patients with a history of breast cancer and in patients with epilepsy (fits). THIORIL 25MG should be used with caution in pregnant and breastfeeding women only if clearly advised by your doctor.
THIORIL 25 MG is not recommended for use in children (aged less than 2 years). It is not recommended for use in elderly patients with dementia related psychosis. It should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged above 65 years). The common side effects associated with the use of Thioril 25 mg are drowsiness, dizziness, headache, blurred vision, dry mouth, constipation, and tremor. Consult your doctor if any of the symptom worsens.

HOW THIORIL 25 MG WORKS
THIORIL 25MG works by inhibiting the release of dopamine (chemical messenger that affects thoughts and mood in the brain) which results in calmness and suppression of aggressive behaviour in affected individuals that is seen associated with schizophrenia condition.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Take THIORIL 25MG as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.
SIDE EFFECTS OF THIORIL 25 MG
COMMON
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Blurred vision
- Dry mouth
- Constipation

- Muscle spasms
- Weight gain
UNCOMMON
- Signs of pseudo-parkinsonism (medicated reaction that imitates similar to parkinson’s disease) such as resting tremors, muscle stiffness and rigidity, postural instability
- Extrapyramidal effects such as an inability to sit still, involuntary muscle contraction, tremors, stiff muscles, and involuntary facial movements
- Dermatitis (skin inflammation)
- Red, itchy skin
- Signs of leukopenia (low white blood cell count) such as fever, chills, sweating, sore throat
- Signs of agranulocytosis (deficiency of granulocytes in blood) such as fever, chills, weakness
- Convulsive seizures
RARE
- Parotid swelling (inflammation of salivary gland located in cheeks)
- Cardiac arrest
Stop taking THIORIL 25MG and contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:
- Signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (serious neurological disorder) such as high fever, sweating, muscles stiffness, fast heartbeat, fast breathing, confusion, drowsiness, or agitation
- Signs of tardive dyskinesia (syndrome characterized by involuntary movements of tongue, face, mouth, lips, and jaws) such as blinking rapidly, chewing motions, grimacing or frowning
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Drowsiness:
Lie down until the drowsiness passes and get up slowly. Do not bend down suddenly. Get a lot of rest. Walk slowly and carefully. Take plenty of fluids. Avoid drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes. Consult your doctor if the symptom persists for long or gets worsened.
Dizziness:
Try to rest and get enough sleep. Try to avoid driving or operating any tools or machines while you feel dizzy. Limit consumption of alcohol as it can aggravate dizziness. Consult and inform your doctor if the symptom worsens.
Headache:
Take rest and drink plenty of water. Avoid taking alcohol and skipping meals. Do not strain your eyes by watching screen for long time. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Dry mouth:
Try to drink plenty of cold water. Sip on cold unsweetened drinks and use lip balm if your lips are dry. Try to brush your teeth twice a day and use mouthwash. Consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.
Constipation:
Try to eat more high-fibre foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables, cereals, and drink plenty of water. Try doing exercise regularly (going for a daily walk or run). If this does not help, inform your doctor for receiving alternate treatment for constipation.
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS
PREGNANCY
THIORIL 25 MG should be used with caution in pregnant women only if it is considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking THIORIL 25MG.
BREASTFEEDING
THIORIL 25MG should be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before taking THIORIL 25MG.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate any machines while taking THIORIL 25MG since it may cause seizures. Consult your doctor before taking THIORIL 25MG.
ALCOHOL
Avoid drinking alcohol while taking THIORIL 25MG since it may cause extreme sleepiness or drowsiness. Consult your doctor before taking THIORIL 25MG.
KIDNEY

Do not take THIORIL 25MG if you are allergic to thioridazine or other phenothiazines (such as chlorpromazine) or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
HEART DISEASE
THIORIL 25MG is not recommended for use in patients with cardiac disorders such as cardiac failure, angina, cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease), left ventricle dysfunction (heart failure), slow heart rate, 2nd or 3rd degree heart block. It is also not indicated for use in patients with family history of congenital prolonged QT syndrome (heart signalling disorder that causes abnormal/irregular heartbeat), ventricular arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat), and/or torsades de Pointes (condition marked by very fast heart rhythm). Consult your doctor before taking THIORIL 25MG.
OTHERS
THIORIL 25MG is not recommended for use if you:
- Have signs of uncorrected hypokalaemia (low potassium levels) such as tiredness, leg cramps, constipation
- Have signs of hypomagnesaemia (low magnesium levels) such as tremors, tiredness, and weakness
- Have severe photosensitivity (extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet rays)
- Are in comatose state or suffering from dementia and severe depression
- Have serious haematological conditions such as bone marrow suppression
- Have congenital disorder that reduces the activity of enzyme cytochrome P450 2D6 (enzyme that causes breakdown of medicines)
Before taking THIORIL 25MG, inform your doctor if you have:
- Epilepsy (fits)
- History of breast cancer
Use in Paediatrics:
THIORIL 25MG is not recommended for use in children (below 2 years of age). It should be used with caution in children and adolescents (aged 2 to 18 years). Consult child’s doctor for advice.
Use in Geriatrics:
THIORIL 25 MG is not recommended for use in elderly patients with dementia related psychosis. It should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged above 65 years). Consult your doctor before taking THIORIL 25MG.
INTERACTIONS
A. Drug-Drug Interactions
Before taking THIORIL 25MG, inform to your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- CNS depressants (medicines used to treat troubled sleeping, anxiety, panic attacks, and seizures) such as barbiturates (Ex. phenobarbital)
- Narcotics such as codeine (used to treat mild to moderate pain)
- Fluoxetine, paroxetine (used to treat depression)
- Fluvoxamine (used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder)
- Pindolol, propranolol (used to treat high blood pressure)
- Epinephrine (used to raise blood pressure)
- Azithromycin, clarithromycin (used to treat bacterial infections)
- Fluconazole (used to treat fungal infections)
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of THIORIL 25MG, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, shock , slow heartrate, fast and pounding heartrate, heart block, torsades de pointes (very fast heart rhythm), myocardial depression (contractile dysfunction in the heart), sedation, extrapyramidal effects (such as muscle stiffness, body spasms, upward eyerolling), confusion, agitation, decreased or increased body temperature, restlessness, seizures, areflexia (decreased muscle responses), coma, dilation of pupil of the eyes, excessive constriction of pupil of the eye, dry skin, dry mouth, nasal congestion, urinary retention, blurred vision, respiratory depression, apnoea (compromised breathing while sleeping), pulmonary oedema (excess fluid in lungs causing breathing difficulties), reduced gut motility, constipation, ileus (lack of intestinal movements), low urine output, and/or uraemia (presence of toxins in blood that cause tiredness, nausea, loss of appetite, a metallic taste in the mouth).
