INTRODUCTION
SUPACEF contain cefuroxime which belongs to a group of medicine called cephalosporin antibiotics. It is an antibiotic used in adults and children to treat infections of lungs or chest, urinary tract, skin and soft tissue, abdomen and also helps to prevent infections during surgery. It works by preventing bacteria from forming the bacterial protective covering (cell wall). This causes the cell walls to rupture resulting in the death of the bacteria.
The common side effects are injection site pain, swelling and redness along the vein, increases in substances (enzymes) produced by the liver, neutropenia or eosinophilia, anaemia. This medicine will be administered by a doctor or nurse. SUPACEF will be given as a drip (intravenous infusion) or as an injection directly into a vein or into a muscle. Your doctor will decide the dose and frequency depending on your condition. Before taking this medicine tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney disease, heart disease, liver problems. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking this medicine.

HOW SUPACEF WORKS

SIDE EFFECTS OF SUPACEF
SERIOUS
- Severe allergic reaction (including raised and itchy rash, swelling, sometimes of the face or mouth causing difficulty in breathing)
- Skin rash, which may blister, and look like small target (central dark spot surrounded by a paler area, with a dark ring around the edge)
- Widespread rash with blisters and peeling skin (sings of Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis)
- Fungal infections
- Severe diarrhoea
COMMON
- Pain, swelling and redness along the vein at the site of injection
- Increases in substances (enzymes) produced by the liver
- Changes in your white blood cell count (neutropenia or eosinophilia)
- Low levels of red blood cells (anaemia)
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Diarrhoea:
Drink lot of fluids, such as water or squash, to avoid dehydration. Do not take any other medicines without consulting to a doctor.

PREGNANCY
SUPACEF should be used with caution in pregnant women. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.
BREASTFEEDING
SUPACEF should be used with caution in breast feeding women. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate any machine while taking this medicine since it may cause feel unwell.
ALCOHOL
Consumption of alcohol is not recommended during treatment with SUPACEF.
KIDNEY
SUPACEF should be used with caution in patients suffering from active kidney diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.
LIVER
SUPACEF should be used with caution in patients suffering from liver function impairment or active liver diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.
ALLERGY
Do not take SUPACEF if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to cefuroxime or any other ingredients in this medicine.
OTHERS
Tell your doctor if you have or had a condition such as,
- Skin rashes and gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhoea
INTERACTIONS
Talk to your doctor if you are taking,
- Antibiotics such as aminoglycoside (used to treat infection)
- Water tablets (diuretics)such as furosemide
- Probenecid (used to treat Gout)
- Oral anticoagulants
- Contraceptive pills
