What is it prescribed for?

Type II Diabetes Mellitus

This medicine is used to lower elevated blood glucose levels in patients with type II diabetes mellitus. It may be used as a single medication or in combination with other anti-diabetic medications.

Allergy

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients with a known allergy to pioglitazone or any other inactive ingredient present along with this medicine.

Heart Failure

This medicine is not recommended for use if you are suffering from a moderate-to-severe heart failure due to the increased risk of serious adverse effects.

Warnings for special population

Pregnancy

This medicine is not recommended for use by women who are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy in the near future. Use of insulin is most preferred during early and mid-stages of pregnancy.

Breast-feeding

This medicine is not recommended for use in women who are breastfeeding. The risk of adverse effect is very high in infants and hence the potential benefits and risks should be considered before using this medicine.

General warnings

Type I diabetes mellitus

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients suffering from type 1 diabetes mellitus since it is not effective in treating this condition.

Heart Failure

This medicine should be used with caution in patients having a mild heart failure. Use of this medication is not recommended if the condition is moderate to severe.

Impaired liver function

This medicine should be used with caution in patients with an impaired liver function due to an increase in the risk of worsening of the patient’s condition. Close monitoring of liver function is necessary while receiving this medicine. Appropriate dose adjustments or replacement with a suitable alternative may be required based on the clinical condition.

Edema

This medicine should be used with caution in patients with edema due to the increased risk of worsening of the patient’s condition. Appropriate dose adjustments or replacement with a suitable alternative may be required based on the clinical condition.

Ovulation problems

This medicine should be used with caution in premenopausal patients due to the increase in chances of ovulation. Adequate contraceptive measures are recommended for such patients to avoid an unplanned pregnancy.

Bone fractures

This medicine may increase the risk of fractures in some patients. This risk is especially higher in female patients. Close monitoring of bone health is recommended during treatment with this medicine. Replacement with a suitable alternative may be required based on the clinical condition.

Bladder cancer

Use of this medicine has been associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer. It may also worsen the condition of patients suffering from bladder cancer.

Pediatric use

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients less than 18 years of age.

Other anti-diabetic medicines

Report the use of any other anti-diabetic medication, especially insulin to the doctor before beginning treatment with this medicine. Appropriate dose adjustments and close monitoring of blood sugar levels may be required based on the clinical condition of the patient.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for the next scheduled dose then the missed dose can be skipped. Do not take two doses within a day to make up for the previous day’s missed dose.

Contact your doctor immediately if an overdose is suspected. Appropriate supportive measures should be initiated immediately if the symptoms are severe.

You are advised to keep a regular check on the blood sugar levels while taking this medicine. This medicine will show better results if you take a controlled diet and exercise regularly. Your dosage is subject to change based on the response to the medication. This medicine should be taken regularly even when your blood sugar level is low.
