Mozep 2 Tablet (Pimozide 2mg)

INTRODUCTION

MOZEP 2MG contains Pimozide which belongs to a group of medicines called neuroleptics. It is indicated for the suppression of motor and phonic tics (an uncontrollable need to repeat certain movements or sounds) in patients with Tourette’s disorder. This medicine works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. Tourette syndrome is a disorder which involves repetitive movements or unwanted sounds (tics) that cannot be easily controlled. These illnesses may cause confusion, hallucinations, believe things that are not true (delusions) and suspicious (paranoia).

Pimozide is an antipsychotic medicine which has the ability to blockade dopaminergic receptors on neurons in the central nervous system. It suppresses motor and a phonic tic in Tourette’s Disorder is thought to be a function of its dopaminergic blocking activity. The receptor blockade is often accompanied by a series of secondary alterations in central dopamine metabolism and function which may contribute to both pimozide therapeutic and untoward effects.

Always take MOZEP 2MG exactly as directed by your doctor. Tell your doctor if you have liver, kidney or heart problems. This medicine is not recommended for use in children and adolescents below 12 years of age. The common side effects are sleepiness, dizziness, headache, nausea and dry mouth. Avoid grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.

HOW MOZEP 2MG WORKS

MOZEP 2MG works by changing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain. It affects the chemicals that allow communication between nerve cells (neurotransmitters).

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Always take MOZEP 2MG exactly as your doctor has told you. Swallow this medicine with a glass of water and do not crush or chew. It must be taken with food.

SIDE EFFECTS OF MOZEP 2MG

SERIOUS
Rash, hives or severe irritation of skin
Neuroleptic malignant syndrome
Arrhythmia
Heart flutters and beats unusually fast
Muscle stiffness, spasm, shaking, trembling or tremors, feeling restless and stiff neck
Confusion, muscle twitching, fits
Swelling, pain and redness in the leg
COMMON
Sweating more than usual
Urinating at night
Dizziness
Sleepiness
Agitated or restlessness
Depression
Difficulty sleeping
Feeling tired or lacking in energy
Loss of appetite
Dry mouth
Being sick (nausea)
Constipation
Headache
Blurred vision
Very oily skin
Erection problems (in men)
Weight gain

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea:

Stick to regular meals and do not eat rich or spicy foods.

Dizziness:

Get up and move around to feel awake, take a nap to take the edge off sleepiness.

Constipation:

Eat fruits, vegetables whole grains and high-fiber foods.

Dry mouth:

Chew sugar-free gum or candies to stimulate the flow of saliva and limit your caffeine intake. Drink small sips of water regularly.

Headache:

Rest and drink plenty of fluids. Ask your doctor to recommend a painkiller.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY
MOZEP 2MG should be used with caution during the last three months of pregnancy. Consult your doctor for advice.

BREASTFEEDING
MOZEP 2MG is not recommended during breastfeeding. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or handle any machines while taking this medicine as it may cause sleepiness.

ALCOHOL
Consumption of alcohol is not recommended while treatment with MOZEP 2MG as it may cause drowsiness and less alertness.

KIDNEY
MOZEP 2MG should be used with caution in patients suffering from kidney function impairment or active kidney diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.

LIVER
MOZEP 2MG should be used with caution in patients suffering from liver function impairment or active liver diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.

ALLERGY
Tell your doctor if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Pimozide.

HEART DISEASE
MOZEP 2MG is not recommended in patients with long QT syndrome (a specific heart rhythm problem), heart attack, severe heart failure and certain irregularities of heart rhythm. Consult your doctor for advice.

OTHERS

Tell your physician, if you have or had:

Lower than normal levels of minerals (electrolytes)
Parkinson’s disease
Depression
Epilepsy
Problems with thyroid gland
Non-cancerous tumour of the adrenal gland (phaeochromocytoma)
History of blood clots
Dementia

INTERACTIONS

Tell your doctor if you are taking,

Ketoconazole, itraconazole, miconazole, fluconazole (treats fungal infection)
Erythromycin, clarithromycin, azithromycin, troleandomycin (treats bacterial infection)
Indinavir, ritonavir, saquinavir (treats viral infection)
Quinidine, disopyramide, procainamide, amiodarone, sotalol, bretylium (treats heart problems)
Terfenadine (treats allergies)
Cisapride (digestive problems)
Mefloquine, quinine (treats malaria)
Nefazodone, amitriptyline, maprotiline, sertraline, paroxetine, citalopram, escitalopram (treats depression)
Chlorpromazine (for mental disorder)
Tranquillisers (helps you to sleep)
Strong painkiller for pain
Medicines for parkinson’s disease and epilepsy
Metoclopramide (treats sickness)
Calcium channel blockers and diuretics (treats blood pressure)
