INTRODUCTION

IROVEL 300MG contains Irbesartan which belongs to the group of medicines called angiotensin-II receptor antagonists. It is indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure (essential hypertension) in adult patients. It can also be used to protect kidney functions in patients who have laboratory evidence of impaired kidney function, high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. Hypertension (also known as high blood pressure) is a heart condition in which the heart pumps blood against the walls of arteries at a high pressure, which may lead to heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and other problems.

Angiotensin-II is a substance produced by the kidneys, that binds to the receptors in the blood vessels, causing vasoconstriction, thus leading to an increase in blood pressure. Irbesartan reduces blood pressure by preventing the binding of angiotensin-II to its receptors in the blood vessel. Along with the treatment, your doctor will recommend you follow certain life-style changes such as quit smoking or alcohol consumption, eat a healthy well-balanced diet with regular physical exercise prescribed to you.

During treatment with irbesartan, your doctor will regularly monitor your kidney function, blood pressure and concentration of electrolytes in your blood to avoid unwanted side effects. Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you have diabetic kidney disease, because periodic monitoring of blood potassium levels is required in such patients to avoid kidney damage. The most common side effects of this medicine are nausea, vomiting, dizziness, tiredness or pain in muscle or joints. Contact your doctor if any of the above symptom bothers you.

Do not take IROVEL 300MG if you are pregnant or breastfeeding women. It is strictly not recommended for use during early pregnancy and must not be taken if you are more than 3 months pregnant, as it may cause serious harm to your baby. This medicine is strictly not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age due to lack of safety data. Consult your doctor before taking. You will notice an improvement in your condition only after using this medicine for about 4-6 weeks.

HOW IROVEL 300MG WORKS

Irbesartan is an angiotensin-II receptor blocker. It acts by preventing the binding of Angiotensin-II (a substance that causes narrowing of the arteries and increases blood pressure) to its receptors in blood vessels. As a result, it causes relaxation of the blood vessel (vasodilation), thus leading to a decrease in blood pressure.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take this medicine as directed by your physician. It can be taken with or without food. Swallow the medicine as whole with enough water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and health condition. Continue to take this medicine, as long as your doctor tells you to do so, to obtain better results.

SIDE EFFECTS OF IROVEL 300MG

SERIOUS
Severe allergic reaction (such as skin rash, itching, redness, dizziness or fainting, swelling of the face, lips and/or tongue and difficulty in breathing)
Signs of liver problem (yellowing of skin and whites of eyes, nausea, vomiting and severe upper stomach pain)
Vasculitis (skin rash with raised purple spots and flat red areas caused by inflammation of small blood vessels)
Signs of kidney problem (such as frequently passing urine, dark or pale urine, blood in urine or pain during urination)
COMMON
Hyperkalemia (increased potassium level in blood)
Nausea or vomiting
Feeling tired
Dizziness
Postural hypotension
Pain in joints or muscles
Anemia

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea or vomiting:

Try taking this medicine with, or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Do not eat rich or spicy food.

Dizziness:

Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid traveling, driving or operating any tools or machines while you are feeling dizzy. If the symptom persists, contact your doctor for advice.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY
IROVEL 300MG is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

BREASTFEEDING
IROVEL 300MG is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate any machines if your ability is affected by this medicine.

ALCOHOL
Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking this medicine.

KIDNEY
IROVEL 300MG is not recommended for use in patients having impaired kidney function (including narrowing of the arteries in the kidneys or have had a kidney transplant). Consult your doctor for advice before taking.

ALLERGY
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to irbesartan.

HEART DISEASE
IROVEL 300MG should be taken with caution in patients with heart problems (such as heart failure, narrowing of the valves or blood vessels in the heart or an enlarged heart muscle). Consult your doctor for advice before taking.

OTHERS

Before taking IROVEL 300MG, inform your doctor if you:

Have or have had excessive vomiting or diarrhea during this treatment
Have diabetic kidney disease
Have primary aldosteronism (increase in aldosterone production)
Are eating a low-sodium diet
Are from Afro-Caribbean origin
Are going to have an operation or receive any anesthesia
Are elderly (75 years or above)

Potassium supplements
Potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g. aldosterone, spironolactone)
Salts containing potassium
Heparin (used for blood thinning)
Lithium (used to treat mental health problems)
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. celecoxib or acetyl salicylic acid)
