Cefrine Oral Suspension (Cefdinir 125mg)

Cefrine Suspension is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the nose, throat, tonsils, ear, skin, etc. This medicine works by killing bacteria. It is not effective against infections caused by fungi or viruses.

Cefrine Suspension may cause some common side effects such as stomach pain, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, etc. Consult your doctor if these symptoms bother your child for a long time or become severe.

Cefrine Suspension can be given with or without food, as prescribed by your child’s doctor. The dose and duration of treatment will depend on the type of infection and severity of your child’s condition. Give this medicine to your child for the recommended duration even if he/she starts feeling better after a few doses. If you discontinue this medicine early, it may lead to antibiotic resistance (a condition where bacteria develop the ability to defeat the antibiotic intended to kill them).

Cefrine Suspension is not recommended for use if your child is allergic to it. Inform your doctor if your child has liver or kidney problems before starting the treatment with this medicine.

What is it prescribed for?

Acute bacterial otitis media

Acute Otitis media (AOM) is an infection of the middle ear (the area behind the eardrum), common in infants and young children. Cefrine Suspension is used to treat acute otitis media caused by bacteria.

Acute bacterial Sinusitis

Sinusitis is the swelling sinuses (hollow spaces located behind the forehead, nose, cheekbones, and in between the eyes). Your child may experience a stuffed nose, and pain or pressure behind your eyes, nose, cheeks, or forehead. Cefrine Suspension is used to treat bacterial sinusitis.

Pharyngitis/Tonsilitis

Pharyngitis and tonsillitis are infections that cause swelling and soreness in the throat and tonsils. Cefrine Suspension is used to treat pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and/or pharyngotonsillitis (a condition where both, the tonsils and the pharynx, are affected).

Skin and Soft tissue infections

Skin and soft tissue infections occur when the bacteria invade the skin and its supporting structures. Cefrine Suspension is used to treat all skin infections including abscesses (pain due to accumulation of pus) caused by bacteria.

Allergy

Avoid giving Cefrine Suspension if your child is allergic to it. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms such as skin rash, itching/swelling (especially of your face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, breathing difficulty, etc.

Drug resistance

Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria evolve and gain the ability to defeat the antibiotics intended to kill them. Complete the entire course of treatment with Cefrine Suspension even if your child feels better after a few doses to prevent antibiotic resistance.

Use in children

Cefrine Suspension is not recommended for use in children less than 6 months of age since the safety and efficacy data are not clinically established.

Missed Dose

Give the missed dose of Cefrine Suspension to your child as soon as possible. If it is already time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not give a double dose to make up for the missed one.

Overdose

Never give more than the prescribed dose to your child. Seek emergency medical attention in case of an overdose with Cefrine Suspension.

Cefrine Suspension can kill the helpful bacteria in your child’s stomach or intestine and cause diarrhoea. Therefore, use this medicine with extreme caution if your child has stomach and intestinal problems, particularly colitis, as it may worsen his/her health condition.

Kidney dysfunction

Cefrine Suspension is filtered by the kidney and removed from the body through urine. Hence, maintain caution while giving Cefrine Suspension to your child if he/she has kidney problems, as it may cause an accumulation of this medicine in the body and increase the risk of side effects.

Liver impairment

Cefrine Suspension should be used with caution if your child has liver problems, as it may cause an accumulation of this medicine in the body and increase the risk of side effects.

Seizures

Cefrine Suspension should be used with caution if your child has a history of seizure episodes (fits), as this medicine can trigger seizure attacks. Your child’s doctor will adjust the dose or replace the medicine with a suitable alternative as required.
