Bionect Ointment (Povidone Iodine 5% / Ornidazole 1%)

Bionect Ointment 15 gm belongs to the class of medications called ‘antiseptic and disinfectant‘ primarily used to treat and prevent skin infections in minor burns, lacerations (deep cut in the skin), cuts, and abrasions (the first layer of skin is scraped off). It also helps to treat infections of the lining of the mouth and throat, such as gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and mouth ulcers. Bionect Ointment 15 gm is also used in infection control during insertion and care of urinary catheters, circumcision (removal of the foreskin from the human penis), suture removal and dressing changes.

Bionect Ointment 15 gm is a combination drug containing Povidone-Iodine and Ornidazole. Povidone Iodine works by inhibiting the growth of infection-causing microbes. As a small molecule, iodine in Bionect Ointment 15 gm can easily penetrate microorganisms and oxidizes essential proteins, nucleotides, and fatty acids, leading to cell death. Ornidazole inhibits protein synthesis and leads to cell death, thereby kills the bacteria. Collectively, both treat cuts, wounds and infections.

Bionect Ointment 15 gm is available in the form of a solution, cream, ointment, external pad, swab, spray, surgical scrub, and eye drops. Bionect Ointment 15 gm is for external use only. Cover the open wounds with a dressing or bandage after applying Bionect Ointment 15 gm. Bionect Ointment 15 gm has common side effects as every medicine does. These include local swelling, itchiness, redness, small blisters, and irritation at the application site. These side effects gradually resolve during the treatment and do not require medical attention.

Brief your medical history to the doctor, if you are allergic to iodine or povidone. Let your doctor know if you have an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) or thyroid diseases, liver, and kidney problems. Please tell your doctor if you are undergoing any lithium therapy or treatment involving radioactive iodine. Bionect Ointment 15 gm should not be used before or after radioiodine scintigraphy or radioiodine treatment of thyroid carcinoma. Using Bionect Ointment 15 gm during breastfeeding may increase the iodine levels in the breastmilk, which can cause hypothyroidism in breastfed infants. Bionect Ointment 15 gm can cause excessive iodine absorption with its vaginal use, hence avoid douching (washing) with Bionect Ointment 15 gm and iodine-containing tampons during breastfeeding. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to conceive before using Bionect Ointment 15 gm since it can affect the unborn baby.

Cuts, Scrapes, Burns and  Skin Infections

Bionect Ointment 15 gm is effective against bacteria (Gram-positive and Gram-negative, including antibiotic-resistant and antiseptic-resistant strains), fungi, viruses, and protozoa. Bionect Ointment 15 gm is used in degerming (physical removal of microbes) stasis ulcers (wound on the leg or ankle due to damaged veins), decubitus ulcers (bed sores), and the umbilical area. It is also used for degerming the intravenous devices in blood transfusions, hyperalimentation (artificial supply of nutrients), cutdowns, and central venous line.

Bionect Ointment 15 gm is available in the form of a solution, cream, ointment, gargle, external pad, swab sticks, spray, surgical scrub. Bionect Ointment 15 gm is for external use only.Solution: Gently clean the affected area with cotton soaked in the solution of Bionect Ointment 15 gm. Allow the solution to dry and cover the wound with a sterile bandage.Cream/Ointment: Take the advised amount of cream/ointment with clean and dry hands on the skin’s affected areas. Cover the open wounds with a sterile dressing or bandage after applying Bionect Ointment 15 gm. Wash your hands before and after using Bionect Ointment 15 gm.Gargle: Gargle or rinse the mouth with Bionect Ointment 15 gm gargle up to 30 seconds and spit after use. Do not swallow the gargle.Swab sticks/External pads: Bionect Ointment 15 gm antiseptic swabs and external pads are used to disinfect the skin before surgery and before bandaging minor cuts, scrapes and burns. Apply the swab with Bionect Ointment 15 gm on the affected area and cover with a bandage if necessary. Spray: Hold the spray container about 4-6 inches away from skin and spray. Allow it to dry and apply bandage/dressing, if necessary.Surgical scrub: Gently apply the Bionect Ointment 15 gm scrub on the affected area, develop lather and scrub thoroughly for 5 minutes. Rinse off using sterile gauze saturated with water.
