Proluton Depot 500 Injection (Hydroxyprogesterone 500mg)

INTRODUCTION

Proluton Depot 500 contains Hydroxy progesterone which belongs to the group of medicines called progestins. It is a hormone medicine used to lower the risk of preterm birth in women with a singleton pregnancy who had a preterm delivery in the past. Hydroxyprogesterone is a synthetic steroid hormone, which reduces the chances of preterm labour and helps to sustain a healthy pregnancy. It is not intended to stop an active preterm labor in pregnant women. It is not used in pregnant women with multiple gestations or in women with any other risk factors for preterm birth. This medicine should never be self-administered and must be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse as an intramuscular injection.

Your doctor will regularly monitor your blood sugar levels, if you have diabetes or pre-diabetes to avoid the risks of decrease in glucose tolerance. The most common side effects of this medicine are injection site pain, swelling or itching, nausea, skin rash and diarrhea. Contact your doctor if any of these symptom bothers you. PROLUTON 500MG is also not recommended for use in pregnant women with uncontrollable high blood pressure and in women with liver or kidney problems. This medicine is not intended for use in children and adolescents under 16 years of age. Consult your doctor before taking.

Prevents preterm labour in pregnant women

HOW PROLUTON 500MG WORKS

PROLUTON 500MG reduces the risk of premature labour in pregnant women by exerting an anti-inflammatory effect on the CNS, which profoundly blunts the proinflammatory state that occurs with initiation of labor and stabilizes pregnancy.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

PROLUTON 500MG will be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse into the muscles (intramuscularly) of the upper outer area of the buttocks as an injection, anywhere between 16-20 weeks of your pregnancy and may last until 37 weeks or until baby is delivered.

Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your condition. Continue to take this medicine, as long as your doctor tells you to do so, to obtain better results.

SIDE EFFECTS OF PROLUTON 500MG

SERIOUS
Symptoms of a blood clot (such as leg swelling and redness, a spot on your leg that is warm to touch and leg pain that gets worse when you bend your foot)
Severe allergic reactions (such as hives, itching and swelling of the face)
Decrease in glucose tolerance
Fluid retention
Depression
Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
High blood pressure
COMMON
Injection site reaction (such as pain, swelling, oozing of blood or fluid, itching or a hard bump)
Hives or itching
Nausea
Diarrhea

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea:

Try taking this medicine with, or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Do not eat rich or spicy food.

Diarrhea:

Drink lots of fluids, such as water or juice, to avoid dehydration. Do not take any medicines without speaking to a doctor.

Hives or itching:

Avoid hot showers because hot water can irritate the skin. Do not rub or scratch the affected area. Use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Regularly use moisturizers to soothe and hydrate the affected area. If it does not get better, speak to a doctor.

PREGNANCY
PROLUTON 500MG is considered safe and intended for use only in pregnant women. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your condition.

BREASTFEEDING
PROLUTON 500MG should be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

KIDNEY
PROLUTON 500MG should be taken with caution in pregnant women who have kidney problems. Consult your doctor for advice.

LIVER
PROLUTON 500MG is not recommended for use in pregnant women with liver problems including liver tumors. Consult your doctor for advice.

ALLERGY
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to hydroxy progesterone.

LUNGS
PROLUTON 500MG should be taken with caution in patients with asthma or other respiratory disease. Consult your doctor for advice.

HEART DISEASE
PROLUTON 500MG is not recommended for use in pregnant women with uncontrollable high blood pressure or other heart problems. Consult your doctor for advice.

OTHERS

Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you have:

Blood clots or other blood clotting disorders in the past
Breast cancer or other hormone-sensitive cancers now or in the past
Unusual vaginal bleeding not related to the current pregnancy
Diabetes or pre-diabetes
Epilepsy (seizures)
Migraine headaches
Depression
