Novonorm 0.5mg Tablet (Repaglinide 0.5mg)

INTRODUCTION

NOVONORM 0.5MG contains Repaglinide which belongs to a group of medicines called oral antidiabetic medicine which helps the pancreas produce more insulin and thereby lower blood sugar (glucose). It is used to control type 2 diabetes in adults along with diet and exercise. It can also be given with metformin or any other medicine for diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which pancreas does not make enough insulin to control the sugar in the blood or where your body does not respond normally to the insulin it produces.

Repaglinide is a short-acting oral secretagogues of the meglitinide class used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus). It lowers the blood glucose levels acutely by stimulating the release of insulin from the pancreas.

Always take this NOVONORM 0.5MG exactly as directed by your doctor. Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have liver, kidney or heart problems and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is not suitable for children and adolescents below 18 years of age. The common side effects are diarrhoea, stomach pain and hypoglycemia.

HOW NOVONORM 0.5MG WORKS

NOVONORM 0.5MG lower blood glucose levels by blocking ATP-dependent potassium channels in pancreatic beta cells, which in turn, stimulates insulin secretion.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Always take this NOVONORM 0.5MG exactly as your doctor has told you. Swallow this medicine with a glass of water immediately before or up to 30 minutes before each main meal.

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Hypoglycaemia:

Eat high sugar snack or drink, then take rest.

Stomach pain:

Place a warm water bottle on your abdomen. Soak in a warm bath. Drink plenty of clear fluids and water.

Diarrhoea:

Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. ORS should be used to prevent dehydration.

INTERACTIONS

Inform your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription or the following,

• Gemfibrozil (lower increased fat levels in blood)
• Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (used to treat depression)
• Beta blockers (treats high blood pressure)
• Ace inhibitors (used to treat heart conditions)
• Aspirin
• Octreotide (used to treat cancer)
• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
• Anabolic steroids and corticosteroids (used for anemia and inflammation)
• Oral contraceptives
• Thiazides
• Danazol (treats breast cysts, endometriosis)
• Thyroid medicines (used to treat low levels of thyroid hormones)
• Sympathomimetics (used to treat asthma)
• Clarithromycin, trimethoprim, rifampicin (used to treat infection)
• Itraconazole and ketoconazole (used to fungal infection)
• Ciclosporin (used to suppress the immune system)
• Deferasirox (used to reduce chronic iron overload)
• Clopidogrel (used to treat blood clots)
• Phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital (used to treat epilepsy)
• St. John’s wort (herbal medicine)
