Niftran 100mg Capsule (Nitrofurantoin 100mg)

INTRODUCTION

NIFTRAN 100MG contains Nitrofurantoin which belongs to a class of medicines known as Antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria that cause infection. It is used to treat and prevent the infections of the bladder, kidney and other parts of the urinary tract. A urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs in any part of your urinary system like kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Mostly it involves the lower urinary tract like bladder or urethra. Nitrofurantoin is an antibacterial agent used for urinary tract infections. It kills the bacteria by interfering with the production of bacterial proteins, DNA, and cell walls. Bacteria cannot multiply without DNA and survive without a cell wall.

Always take this NIFTRAN 100MG exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have liver, kidney problems and if you have pregnant or breastfeeding mothers. It is not recommended for use in children below 3 months of age. The common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea. This medicine should be taken with food or milk so this will help to avoid stomach upset and also helps absorption.

HOW NIFTRAN 100MG WORKS

NIFTRAN 100MG kills the bacteria by interfering with the production of

bacterial proteins, DNA, and cell walls. Bacteria cannot multiply without DNA and survive without a cell wall.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take this NIFTRAN 100MG as prescribed by your doctor. Swallow this medicine as a whole, do not crush or chew. It can be taken with or without food.

SIDE EFFECTS OF NIFTRAN 100MG

SERIOUS
Sudden wheeziness
Difficulty in breathing
Swelling of the eyelids, face or lips, rash or itching
COMMON
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhoea

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea:

Stick to simple normal meals and do not eat rich or spicy foods.

Diarrhoea:

Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. ORS should be used to prevent dehydration.

Vomiting:

Drink clear or ice-cold drinks. Eat light, bland foods and avoid fried, greasy or sweet foods.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY
NIFTRAN 100MG should be used with caution in pregnant women. It should not be used during labour because there is a possibility that use at this stage may affect the baby. Consult your doctor for advice.

BREASTFEEDING
NIFTRAN 100MG should be used with caution in breastfeeding mothers. Consult your doctor before taking.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate machinery while taking this medicine, since it may cause dizziness or drowsiness.

KIDNEY
NIFTRAN 100MG is not recommended in patients with active kidney diseases. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

ALLERGY
Do not take if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Nitrofurantoin.

OTHERS

Inform your doctor if you have or had,

Porphyria (blood disorder)
G6PD (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) deficiency
Diabetes
Any illness causing severe weakness
Allergic reactions

INTERACTIONS

Inform your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription or the following,

Magnesium trisilicate (used for indigestion)
Probenecid or sulfinpyrazone (used for gout)
Atropine, hyoscine (slow the passage of food through the stomach)
Acetazolamide (used for glaucoma)
Potassium citrate mixture
Quinolones (used to treat infections)
Typhoid vaccine
