Neosporin-H Ointment 5 gm belongs to the class of ‘antibiotics’ and is primarily used to treat bacterial infections. Eye formulations of Neosporin-H Ointment 5 gm effectively treat bacterial infections of the external eye, uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye (uvea)), eye injury, radiation, chemical burns. Bacterial infection occurs when harmful bacteria grow in the body and causes illness. Neosporin-H Ointment 5 gm will not work for infections caused by fungi and viruses.

Neosporin-H Ointment 5 gm is composed of four medicines: Bacitracin, Hydrocortisone, Neomycin, and Polymyxin B. Bacitracin is a bacteriostatic medicine (stops the growth or reproduction of bacteria). It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Hydrocortisone belongs to the class of corticosteroids. It blocks the production of prostaglandins (chemical messengers) that make the affected area red, swollen and itchy. On the other hand, Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic and prevents the synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out vital functions. Polymyxin B, an antibiotic, destroys the bacterial membranes by binding to the phospholipids on cell membranes of gram-negative bacteria. This process of binding causes the loss of essential metabolites in bacteria.

Your doctor will advise the appropriate dose that suits your infection. Common side effects of Neosporin-H Ointment 5 gm include burning, itching, skin rash, redness, dryness, and eye irritation. Let your doctor know if you are sensitive to Neosporin-H Ointment 5 gm or any other medications. Aminoglycoside antibiotics like Neomycin are highly absorbed when applied on burned skin and can also cause kidney problems. Ointment: Apply a thin layer of cream with clean and dry hands on the skin’s affected areas. You can also apply Neosporin-H Ointment 5 gm with a piece of clean cotton wool or gauze swab. It is usually applied one to three times a day. Wash your hands before and after using Neosporin-H Ointment 5 gm on the affected areas unless the treatment is for hands.Eye ointment: Wash your hands thoroughly before applying the eye ointment to your eye to avoid contamination. Please do not touch the ointment tube tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface. Tilt your head back, look upward and create a pouch by pulling your lower eyelid down. After using, wipe the tip of the tube with a clean tissue and close the cap tightly.Eye drops: Tilt your head back and pull your lower eyelid downwards and outwards. Gently squeeze the dropper and put the eye drops inside the eye/eyes. Blink a few times to spread the medication inside your eye.Ear drops: Do not touch the dropper and hold it close to the ear. Gently squeeze the dropper and put the drops inside the ear.
