Overview

Glucobay M50 Tablet is used for Type 2 diabetes mellitus, Maturity onset diabetes, Polycystic ovary syndrome and other conditions. Glucobay M50 Tablet may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Glucobay M50 Tablet contains Acarbose and Metformin as active ingredients.
Glucobay M50 Tablet works by inhibiting pancreatic alpha-amylase and intestinal alpha-glucosidase resulting in delayed hydrolysis of carbohydrates; decreasing the amount of glucose and controls the amount of glucose in the blood;

Uses

Glucobay M50 Tablet is used for the treatment, control, prevention, & improvement of the following diseases, conditions and symptoms:
Type 2 diabetes mellitus
Maturity onset diabetes
Polycystic ovary syndrome

Side-effects

The following is a list of possible side-effects that may occur from all constituting ingredients of Glucobay M50 Tablet. This is not a comprehensive list. These side-effects are possible, but do not always occur. Some of the side-effects may be rare but serious. Abdominal pain
Diarrhea
Flatulence
Fulminant hepatitis
Hypersensitive skin reactions
Edema
Ileus or subileus
Thrombocytopenia
Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis
Gastrointestinal disturbances
Low ph in body tissues and blood
Lack or loss of appetite for food
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Weight loss
Altered sense of taste includes metallic taste
Rash
Malabsorption of vitamin b12
Skin reactions

Precautions

Before using Glucobay M50 Tablet, inform your doctor about your current list of medications, over the counter products (e.g. vitamins, herbal supplements, etc.), allergies, pre-existing diseases, and current health conditions (e.g. pregnancy, upcoming surgery, etc.). Adhere to dietary instructions
Blurred vision
Diabetic ketoacidosis
Elevated serum transaminase
Hypoglycemia if taking Acarbose with a sulfonylurea or insulin
If taking Acarbose with a sulfonylurea or insulin, watch out for symptoms of low blood sugar
Symptoms like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue, anorexia and dark urine
Take this medicine three times a day before meals

Interactions with Glucobay M50 Tablet

If you use other drugs or over the counter products at the same time, the effects of Glucobay M50 Tablet may change. This may increase your risk for side-effects or cause your drug not to work properly. Tell your doctor about all the drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are using, so that you doctor can help you prevent or manage drug interactions. Glucobay M50 Tablet may interact with the following drugs and products:
Acarbose changes the bioavailability of digoxin
Anti-diabetic drugs
Charcoal, amylase, and pancreatin reduce effect of Acarbose
Furosemide
Prednisone
Salbutamol or terbutaline
Sulfonylureas or Insulin may increase hypoglycemia when coadministered with Acarbose
Thiazides, diuretics, corticosteroids, phenothiazines, thyroid products, estrogens, oral contraceptives, phenytoin, nicotinic acid, sympathomimetics, calcium channel-blocking drugs, and isoniazid may lead to loss of blood glucose control when coadministered with Acarbose
When not to use Glucobay M50 Tablet
Hypersensitivity to Glucobay M50 Tablet is a contraindication. In addition, Glucobay M50 Tablet should not be used if you have the following conditions:
Acute myocardial infarction
Cardiovascular collapse
Chronic intestinal diseases
Cirrhosis
Colonic ulceration
Diabetic ketoacidosis
Hypersensitivity
Inflammatory bowel disease
Intestinal obstruction
Renal disease
