Gutron 2.5mg Tablet (Midodrine 2.5mg)

INTRODUCTION

GUTRON 2.5MG contains Midodrine which belongs to the group of medicines called alpha-1 adrenergic agonist. It is used to treat low blood pressure in adults when other treatments have not worked. Symptoms of low blood pressure includes dizziness or lightheadedness, fainting, blurred vision, nausea, fatigue or lack of concentration.

Midodrine is a prodrug of deglymidodrine. It increases your blood pressure by enhancing smooth muscle tone leading to vasoconstriction of blood vessels. Prior to the treatment, your doctor would check your kidney function and blood pressure to access your condition. During the treatment, regular monitoring of your blood pressure while you are lying down or standing up will be required.

The most common side effects of taking this medicine are high blood pressure, chest pain, increased heartbeat, shortness of breath, headache and blurred vision. Contact your doctor immediately, if you experience any of these symptoms. It is always important that you do not take this medicine late in the evening. Try to take your last daily dose at least 4 hours before bedtime. Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you have any other heart disease or kidney disease. This medicine is not recommended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women and in children less than 18 years of age.

HOW GUTRON 2.5MG WORKS

Midodrine is converted to its active metabolite, deglymidodrine which binds to and activates alpha1-adrenergic receptors present in the blood vessels, which enhances smooth muscle tone, leading to peripheral vasoconstriction and elevation of blood pressure.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take this medicine as directed by your physician. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose for you depending upon your condition. Continue to take this medicine, as long as your doctor tells you to do so, to obtain better results.

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Feeling sick (nausea):

Try taking this medicine with, or just after meal. Stick to simple meals. Do not eat rich or spicy food.

Scalp itching:

Avoid hot showers or baths because hot water can irritate the scalp. Do not rub or scratch the affected area.

Headache:

Rest and drink plenty of fluids. Do not drink too much alcohol.

PREGNANCY
GUTRON 2.5MG is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

BREASTFEEDING
GUTRON 2.5MG is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate machinery while taking this medicine, since it may cause dizziness or light headedness.

ALCOHOL
Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking this medicine.

KIDNEY
Do not take GUTRON 2.5MG if you have severe kidney disease. Consult your doctor for advice.

ALLERGY
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to midodrine.

HEART DISEASE
Do not take GUTRON 2.5MG if you have heart diseases like high blood pressure, abnormal heartbeat, heart attack or angina. Consult your doctor for advice.

OTHERS

Do not take this medicine, if you:

Have glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye), poor vision due to diabetes, an over-active thyroid gland, pheochromocytoma (tumour near the kidney) or an enlarged prostate

Medicines which relieve nasal congestion relievers (e.g. dexamethasone)
Medicines that narrow blood vessels (e.g. phenylephrine, dopamine)
Sympathomimetic agents (e.g. ephedrine)
Steroids (used to treat inflammation) e.g. fludrocortisone acetate
